Two-Year Master of Law with Certificate in Legal English
The Graduate, International, Compliance, and Legal Studies (GICLS) office of Widener University’s Delaware Law School offers a two-year Master of Laws (LLM) program with a Certificate in Legal English for foreign-trained attorneys. This innovative program allows foreign-trained lawyers a chance to enhance their legal skills while acclimating to a U.S. law school environment.
ADVANTAGES OF THE TWO-YEAR LLM
The two-year LLM program is designed for foreign-trained attorneys whose native language is not English. Students in this programs will be fully integrated into the law school community during both years of study. This program bridges the gap between students’ backgrounds abroad and their particular focus areas of study. The two-year LLM program seeks to provide a deeper understanding of the practice of law in the U.S., including legal research, case briefing, and exam-taking tips. The program also seeks to provide the opportunity to master legal English oral and writing skills, grammar, communication, listening, and note-taking. Students in this program will work closely with law faculty in a collaborative environment to cultivate their legal skills.
TWO-YEAR LLM CURRICULUM
Students will start their program by taking courses, such as: Legal English, Research and Writing, Ethics, Business Law, and more. This intuitive approach allows students additional time to develop their academic skills while learning from accomplished law school faculty alongside both U.S. and foreign students. All classes in the two year LLM program are taught on the Wilmington, Delaware law school campus by Delaware Law School faculty, all of whom hold a J.D.
After the first year of study, students in the two year program can also spend the summer between their LLM years continuing their legal studies in a number of ways. Options include working in internships or taking classes.
During the second year of study, students will take classes based on their applied program. They may earn a Master of Law in Corporate Law and Finance or can choose a General Master of Law in a variety of concentrations. Students may choose to continue on with their studies by applying for Delaware Law’s Doctor of Juridical Science (SJD) program.

The two-year LLM with Certificate in Legal English offers foreign-trained lawyers a distinctive opportunity to immerse themselves in the study of U.S. and international law along with experiencing the rich culture of the surrounding region, which includes Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, and New York City. Two years in Delaware allows students to fully appreciate all that the mid-Atlantic region has to offer.
Students will also have opportunities to visit court proceedings, attend talks by special guest lecturers, and participate in the many social events sponsored by the law school. With conveniently located dormitories on campus, students are close to classrooms, the law library, and other school facilities, and can easily interact with classmates.

DEGREE REQUIREMENTS
After the first 24 semester hours of study, eligible students may earn a Certificate in Legal English. After the remaining 24 semester hours of study, eligible students may earn the Master of Law in Corporate Law & Business, or a General Master of Law in a variety of concentrations, which allows students to tailor their degree to their career goals. Degree requirements must be completed within four years from the date of matriculation.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
The two-year LLM program is intended for applicants who have an English proficiency score between a 60 and 83 on the TOEFL and between a 5.5 and 6.5 on the IELTS on all categories. English proficiency test scores should be dated no more than two years prior to the date of application. Applicants to the two-year LLM program must have completed a first degree in law from a qualifying non-U.S. law school.
