Once accepted to Delaware Law by the Admissions Committee, you will automatically receive instructions and forms required to apply for financial assistance.
All financial aid applicants must file both a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and Delaware Law Data form. The FAFSA can be done online at https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa. (Be sure to indicate the Delaware Law code: B04724.) JD, LLM, MJ, and Legal Studies applicants can complete or download Widener Law Data forms here.
Applicants who intend to borrow through the Federal Direct Loan Program must also complete a Master Promissory Note.
Each applicant is evaluated for aid only after all required forms have been received and the applicant has been formally admitted to Delaware Law. Because financial aid for entering students is awarded on a rolling basis, it is recommended that applicants begin the process of applying for aid as soon as possible after application to Delaware Law for law school admission.
Returning students are sent an email that contains the necessary links to start the application process for financial assistance.
The priority filing deadline for returning students is April 1. Students whose Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and Financial Aid Data form (see our financial aid forms page) are received by the Office of Financial Aid by April 1 will receive priority in the awarding process and in determining eligibility for the Federal Perkins Loan and Federal Work-Study funds.
The Financial Aid Office encourages students to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool located within the FAFSA to download your Federal Tax Information when completing the FAFSA: https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa. You can access your renewal application by using your SFA User ID and password. The Delaware Law Institutional Data form can be downloaded here.
Students planning to enroll for a summer session and who require financial aid must download and complete a Summer Intent form. Additional forms are available in the Office of Financial Aid. Students attending summer school for the first time or studying abroad are encouraged to schedule an appointment with Financial Aid to finalize their financial assistance. Evening and phone appointments are available on a limited basis. Students attending summer classes must indicate their requested summer loan amount on the Summer Intent form.
It is vitally important that students submit all required forms to the Office of Financial Aid in a timely manner. Students are also reminded to carefully read and complete all financial aid forms correctly. Failure to do so will cause delays in processing and may result in the loss of financial assistance.
Transfer students are encouraged to simultaneously submit all required financial aid information and forms with their admission application so that applications for financial aid can be reviewed immediately after admission. Please see instructions for new students.
Visiting students are not eligible for federal financial aid through Delaware Law. To arrange for financial assistance, visiting students should contact the Office of Financial Aid at their home institution. Delaware Law’s Financial Aid Office is happy to complete a consortium agreement with the student’s home institution.
Delaware Law students visiting another institution may elect to have their financial aid processed by Delaware Law's Financial Aid Office by having the school they will attend complete a Delaware Law Consortium Agreement, available here as a download or available at the Office of Financial Aid. Students should review the Delaware Law Consortium Policy. Financial aid will only be processed for students who have been approved as visitors by the Office of Student Academic Affairs. Delaware Law's Financial Aid Office will process both federal and private financial aid for all eligible students.
